Adult fitness: Body Beast Supplements

I have been doing BeachBody programs for a little over a year now and supplementation is still a difficult topic. Everybody has an opinion on what to use, when to use it, and how much to use. I have done my research on the products I use, as I tell all my customers to do. Take it upon yourself to do the homework on anything you put into your body! I have found a lot of products out there that just don’t work for me. I’m not saying they don’t work,  just not for me. everyone’s body is different and handles supplements in a different way. What works for some won’t for others.

I just received my copy of the new BeachBody program called the Body Beast. BeachBody has finally launched a supplement line of products made for those who want to BULK up. I was reading the guide that came with my new program called ” The Book of Beast” written by the trainer Sagi Kalev. He has written a great description of the new supplements. Instead of trying to sound like a know it all, I will let him explain this new line of supplements in his own words. Usually when I read an article on supplements I cannot understand half of what the person who wrote the article is talking about. Sagi did an outstanding job of explaining these new supplements. I will be doing 1 whole round of BodyBeast using these supplements so I can give an accurate review of them. Here is Sagi Kalev’s description of the 4 new supps.

 BeachBody Hardcore Base Shake

Each serving (1 scoop) has 18 grams of whey protein isolate and 9 grams of maltodextrin + dextrose. It’s low-fat and has 130 calories per serving.

Here’s a quick, convenient way to help make sure you’re getting all the amino acids you need. Your body absorbs whey protein quickly, making this supplement ideal post-workout to get muscle-building proteins into your system ASAP.

The dextrose, a simple carb, provides quick-release energy, driving the protein to your muscle cells. The maltodextrin is a complex carb, meaning it’s slightly harder for your body to break down, so it needs to be processed in the liver. This makes absorption slower and helps you keep your blood sugar steady. Furthermore, combining the two is an optional way to replenish your glycogen, a blood sugar backup energy supply found in your muscles and your liver.

You also may notice that we designed it to be low-fat, and with only 130 calories, it’s more versatile than many mass-gainer supplements. You can use Beachbody hardcore Base Shake with Beachbody Fuel Shot for quick energy as a pre- or postworkout drink, or you can dump more food into it and turn it into the mother of all mass-gaining, calorie-stacking beverages.

There’s 1 daily scoop of  Beachbody Hardcore Base Shake allowed in the Beast Eating Plan outside the Portion List, but don’t feel compelled to limit yourself to that amount. We’ve also included it as a protein portion, so feel free to stock up and use it as a fast easy way to hit your protein numbers!

 BeachBody Fuel Shot

Each Serving (2 scoops) has 45 grams of dextrose + maltodextrin and 5 grams of whey protein. It’s also low-fat, and has 200 calories per serving.

Basically, Beachbody Fuel Shot works in tandem with the Beachbody Hardcore Basic Shake. While Hardcore Base can be used primarily to get your protein, Beachbody Fuel Shot will help restore your carbohydrates.

Normally, a big hit of carbs like this could be problematic, but not around workout time. your body has many energy systems, but the two primary ones for a Body Beast workout are your blood sugar and your glycogen stores. Basically your body burns through blood sugar, and when it’s done, it taps into glycogen, a fuel source that’s particularly important in weight lifting, considering that your muscles actually have their own private glycogen reserves.

So you want to keep these two systems topped off. the dextrose + maltodextrin one two punch, as described previously, is perfect for that.

Beachbody Fuel Shot is also loaded with electrolytes, which is important, considering that when you lift hard, you sweat and burn through your body’s mineral supply. Sipping Beachbody Fuel Shot throughout your workout can keep you hydrated, keep your energy up, and keep your electrolytes in check.

Again, beachbody Fuel Shot doesn’t contain any added colors, flavors, artificial sweeteners, or fat, making it a simple addition to any meal when you need a few additional carbs.

We’ve also worked Beachbody Fuel Shot into the Beast eating Plan: 2 scoops per day to be exact. As is the case with Beachbody Hardcore Base Shake, don’t limit yourself. We’ve included it as a fruit portion, so grab yourself an extra tub and use it as a fast, easy way to hit your fruit numbers!

BeachBody M.A.X. Muscle Acceleration Xtreme Creatine

Don’t get this safe, effective supplement confused with steroids. The two are entirely different. When you exercise, your body metabolically breaks down the various fuels you get nutritionally, such as glucose and fatty acids, into adenosine triphosphate, or ATP. ATP provides the energy that makes your muscles work.

Your muscles generate ATP in a variety of ways. When your workout is extra challenging, you generate ATP using anaerobic (or “oxygen-poor”) pathways. In other words, your muscles can’t get the oxygen they need to make ATP fast enough, so they need to figure out alternative routes.

To do this, your muscles use a compound generated by your liver, kidneys, and pancreas called phosphocreatine (aka creatine phosphate). However, you can only create so much of it at a time, and once you run out, your access to ATP is diminished and things get difficult.

Of course, when you stop exercise, you allow oxygen into your system and it recharges your ATP. That’s why you can max out on reps, stop for a few minutes, and then crank out a few more.

When you supplement with creatine, you’re basically helping your body supply a little more phosphocreatine to the ATP cause, thus allowing your muscles to crank out a few extra reps which brings you that much closer to your goals.

Furthermore, since the creatine works to recharge your batteries, it also helps combat muscle pain, helping you recover faster.

How much creatine should you use? If you’re a veteran creatine user, you may have a protocol that works for you. We say go for it. However, we’ve found most lifters benefit from 2 scoops (10g) postworkout when they’re really going for mass. We also suggest reducing their creatine intake to 1 scoop (5g) during the Beast phase, to help avoid the water retention that can be associated with creatine use.

 BeachBody Super Suma

Suma root, also known as Brazilian ginseng or para toda ( which means “for all things”), has been used by the indigenous peoples of the Amazon region for generations as a general cure-all, as well as a tonic for helping with strength, energy, rejuvenation, and sexual prowess.

In the 1970s, suma root became known as ” the Russian secret,” as it was purportedly taken by Russian Olympic athletes to help with muscle-building and endurance without the side effects associated with anabolic androgenic steroids.

Keep in mind tha in no way are we talking about anabolic steroids, Ecdysteroids, which occur naturally in some insects and plants, have been shown to have the anabolic effect of steroids without the androgenic effects. This means that they benefit  your metabolic pathways without messing with your hormones like pharmaceutical “steroids” do, in fact, steroids aren’t sterols, but hard drugs that simply use the word “steroid” as a name.

Even without the side effects of steroids, suma root is still considered to be cheating in some circles. it’s currently on the World Anti-Doping Association’s (WADA) banned substances list, because it was found to be of ” similar chemical structure or similar biological effect” to known “peptide hormones, growth factors, and related substances” (or “steroids”). this means that it’s banned only because it mimics some steroids in testing, not because it’s harmful in any way.

Like I said above, I think this was a great explanation of the BodyBeast supplements and very informative. Thanks Sagi!
